Gilmour AquaDrive Motor Oscillating Sprinkler at Costco: Product Review

As a new homeowner, I find that there are countless things that I must buy that I never needed before when I lived in an apartment. Grass seeds, for one, and you know, a sprinkler. Never knew it was needed. Turns out that watering the lawn with a hose is long and tiring. So for my sprinkler needs, as with many others, I turned to Costco, where I found the Gilmour AquaDrive Motor Oscillating Sprinkler, for a very attractive price.

The Gilmour Sprinkler was available at Costco for $18.69, which is really cheap considering the quality. A cheap sprinkler was on sale at Giant Tiger for about the same price, and there is just no comparison; the other one was straight out of the 1970s, but with the quality you would expect from something made in China in the 90s. So not great. It is made in China (now, not in the 90s!) by the Robert Bosch Tool Corporation.

The Gilmour Sprinkler is of a mostly metal construction, which is nice, since it’s going to be dragged around quite a bit.

As you can see on the above image, there is a nice little filter to prevent any sort of debris getting inside the AquaDrive motor; in a related note, the box suggest that it is important to drain the water out of the motor after use, especially in cold weather, as the freezing water could damage it. Just between you and me, if it’s freezing outside I’ll not be watering the lawn. I’ll be inside, taking care of other things.

As you can see in the picture, the whole thing is pretty cleanly assembled and seems solid and durable; to be fair, I think that all oscillating sprinkler must have some sort of water-driven motor to make the jets oscillate, so to speak, so I’m not sure how this one is different, except its got a fancy name, but I have tried it and it works great, which brings us to the last point: the jets.

Just like the rest of the sprinkler, the jets seem sturdy and well-built, although they are quite clearly plastic. What is really cool about them is that they are fully adjustable, as you can see right here:

There are two little knobs on the oscillating part of the sprinkler, which lets you adjust the spread of the jets, so to speak; each half of jets is adjustable independently of the the other, and there are two red collar-type adjustments, which let you decide on the reach, or angle of the spray, in each direction. While this seems like a lot of nothing, it is really useful, and really easy to use, which is a bonus.

The Gilmour Oscillating Sprinkler with AquaDrive Motor boasts that is can water 4,000 square feet of lawn without being moved around, a claim I found dubious, but after having tried it, there is absolutely no doubt that it can do it, if not more. It put my new gutter covers to the test! It is really easy to use, adjust and drain after use, and I’m certain I’ll have it for a long time. For $18.69, plus taxes and minus my 2% Executive cashback at Costco, this is a really good deal. I’ll let you know if anything changes.
